Kids head to affordable summer camp

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Summer camp is a right of passage for many kids – but there are a lot of families who can’t afford it. That’s why the Salvation Army raises money to send children to camp every year.

68 kids from the Greater Portland area boarded a bus Saturday morning headed to the Salvation Army’s Camp Sebago in Standish.

Social Service Coordinator Ruth Stewart says a week at camp can cost anywhere from $500 to $3,000 dollars. This camp costs only $35 dollars, allowing children to experience camp who otherwise, may not have had the opportunity.

The children from Portland are among nearly 200 kids at camp from Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.
