3 Steps To Being Better Prepared for Disaster

Natural and man-made disasters of recent years have proven that emergencies can happen unexpectedly in communities just like yours. Tornadoes, wildfires, flash floods, historic earthquakes, tsunamis, large scale power outages, and man-made tragedies are just a few examples. And even though the 2013 hurricane season started out slower than expected, a number of extreme weather events are predicted for the upcoming months, and knowing what to expect is key.

September is National Preparedness Month, a FEMA initiative that began in 2004 to keep Americans aware and prepared for emergencies.

Not everyone in your household may be in the same place when a disaster happens, so it’s important to make sure that the entire family is ready in the event of a disaster or emergency.

Develop a Plan
Your emergency plan should include a group meeting place, one near the home, and one outside the neighborhood. Identify an emergency contact person from outside the immediate area in case local telephone lines are overwhelmed or not functioning. Designate responsibilities for each member of your household and plan to work together as a team.

Any emergency plan should also include decisions about where family members will go if ordered to evacuate and what route they will take to get there. It’s a good idea to include alternate routes in case roads are closed. If pets are part of the household, make sure to include plans for them such as pet-friendly hotels and animal shelters along the evacuation route.

Assemble a Kit
Being prepared means being equipped with the proper supplies you may need in the event of an emergency or disaster. Keep your supplies in an easy-to-carry emergency preparedness kit that you can use at home or take with you in case you must evacuate.

Emergency kits should include items such as:  

  • battery-powered or crank radio
  • weather alert radio
  • extra batteries
  • first aid kit
  • sanitary wipes
  • dust mask
  • water for drinking and sanitation
    water purification tablets
  • waterproof matches and/or butane lighter
  • crank flashlight
  • plastic sheeting
  • non-perishable food for at least three days
  • disinfectants and medications
  • medical information for entire family, including details about dosages of required medications and a list of known health issues

Raley’s Store Customers & Employees Donate $37,110.22 for Oklahoma Tornado Relief.

Raley’s Family of Fine Stores, a Sacramento-based grocer, announced Tuesday that $74,220.44 was raised by store customers and employees thanks to the Food for Families collection boxes that were designated for the Oklahoma Tornado Relief efforts during the month of June.
The donation, collected in only four weeks, has been split between The Salvation Army and the American Red Cross with each organization receiving a check for $37,110.22 to be used for Oklahoma relief efforts. Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) teams of The Salvation Army have been providing disaster relief to Oklahomans in need since the EF5 tornado swept through the region on May 20.

In July, The Salvation Army transitioned to long-term recovery operations for families and individuals who have been impacted by the storm, including everything from food and financial assistance to emotional care and rebuilding efforts. These efforts will continue for at least the next two years.

“This is another great example of the incredible generosity of this community,” said Major Bill Dickinson, Salvation Army Divisional Commander of the Del Oro Division. “The Salvation Army is truly grateful for efforts made by Raley’s and its customers and employees. This will go a long way to provide any assistance now and in the future for the families and individuals in Oklahoma.”

“Daddy’s Home” comic strip raises awareness for Hurricane Sandy relief

Check out the comics section in today’s paper and you might see the latest from the acclaimed comic strip, “Daddy’s Home,” which highlights the still very present need in New York and New Jersey in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

The comic portrays the iconic Star Jet roller coaster sitting in the ocean in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, perhaps one of the most famous and enduring images from Hurricane Sandy’s devastating sweep along the East Coast last November.

“I want people to be aware that there’s still work to do,” said Tony Rubino, creative director of the syndicated comic alongside illustrator, Gary Markstein, who directs readers to The Salvation Army’s website (www.SalvationArmyUSA.org).

Eight months later, there is indeed a lot to be done for impacted residents. The Salvation Army continues to provide long-term assistance and disaster case management to help survivors find resources for rebuilding their damaged homes, while also providing financial assistance and referral services to residents in the hardest hit areas of Staten Island, Queens and Long Island.

Salvation Army’s Long Island Recovery Center Offers Long-Term Assistance to Sandy Survivors

Long Island residents still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy now have one more place to find help.

On Thursday, July 11, The Salvation Army Greater New York Division held an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the official opening of its Long Island Sandy Recovery Center which will offer long-term assistance to survivors of the fall 2012 storm. Unique to the area, the new recovery center will provide disaster case management to help eligible survivors find resources for rebuilding their damaged homes.

“We wrapped up our short-term relief efforts in 2012, then entered a recovery phase, and now have officially switched our operations to long-term recovery, as we, together with our partners, work to get people back into their homes or into a new permanent home,” said Major Steven Stoops, Associate Social Ministries Secretary for The Salvation Army Greater New York Division.

Over the past eight months, The Salvation Army has provided financial assistance, referral services to the hardest hit areas of Staten Island, Queens and Long Island, while also playing an active role in bringing funding and services to those affected through partnerships with other non-profit agencies.

As the state continues recovery operations, homeowners like Ellen Levitsky are grateful for the support of The Salvation Army, which helped clean up her storm-ravaged home.

“I never thought anyone would come to help,” Levitsky said. “I feel like I should be pinched. I’m so thankful for the help that The Salvation Army has provided, and how quickly.”

Two more Salvation Army Sandy Recovery Centers are in the works for Staten Island and Far Rockaway, which will replicate the case-management model of the Long Island site. Both centers are in need of staff.

Out-Of-State Salvation Army Teams Arrive To Aid In Colorado Fires

The Salvation Army has been working nonstop to provide for evacuees and first responders of the largest burning wildfire in Colorado’s history. Since sparking by lightning strike on June 5, the wildfire has burned up approximately 140 acres and is now covering 110 square miles of the state’s forests, resulting in thousands of evacuations.

Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) teams of The Salvation Army are working to meet the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of impacted residents, evacuees and first responders.

EDS teams from New Mexico, California, Wyoming and Montana were called to strengthen The Salvation Army’s services in multiple locations around the state. In just eleven days, EDS teams have provided thousands of meals, snacks and drinks to first responders, law enforcement and evacuees of multiple fires, including the Black Forest, Klinkus, and Royal Gorge Fires.

Today, The Salvation Army begins feeding operations at the West Fork Fire shelter in Del Norte. Teams remain on standby to provide relief in the East peak Fire burning near Walsenburg.

Disaster Services Continues In Oklahoma

Despite thunderstorms and threat of severe weather, The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster response teams have worked diligently since the early hours of Sunday evening to provide support to first responders and those impacted in the Shawnee, Carney and Little Axe area as well as Moore, Oklahoma.

Now that the all persons have been accounted for in the destruction areas, families and individuals are being allowed back into their neighborhoods. As this occurs, The Salvation Army is ramping up its operations on the ground. Twelve Salvation Army Disaster Canteens (mobile kitchens) from various locations in Arkansas and Oklahoma are roaming in the Shawnee and Moore devastation areas.

As of Tuesday, The Salvation Army provided 4,684 hot and cold meals, 7,752 drinks and 3,188 snacks. This assistance will continue for the foreseeable future as The Salvation Army is committed to supporting the residents of this community as they return to their homes and begin rebuilding their lives.

In addition to providing food, hydration and emotional and spiritual care, The Salvation Army is also securing warehousing and staging areas as they prepare to increase operations to serve all those affected by the tornadoes.

Monetary donations continue to be the most critical need as supplies and personnel are mobilized. The Salvation Army is unable to accept in kind donations at this time. By far the most effective way to support The Salvation Army response in Oklahoma, is by making a financial contribution:

Salvation Army Meeting Unique Needs in Oklahoma Thanks to Your Support

Having lost everything in the Moore, Oklahoma tornado on Monday, the woman in the above photo along with her husband and child had only the clothes on their backs. Major Steve Morris of The Salvation Army counseled and prayed with the family and coordinated material assistance to help them get back on their feet.

Since Monday’s devastating storm, The Salvation Army has been helping families and individuals like this with food, hydration, and other basic needs, in addition to spiritual and emotional counseling.

The ministry of The Salvation Army is a unique part of our Emergency Disaster Services (EDS), but is oftentimes the service that provides the most comfort to disaster survivors. In an effort to better meet the emotional needs of Moore residents, an additional 14 Salvation Army officers from Florida traveled to Oklahoma to assist the Emotional and Spiritual Personnel already serving on the ground.

Working with partner organizations like the Southern Baptist Association and the American Red Cross, The Salvation Army in Oklahoma and Arkansas has been preparing and distributing meals and snacks to those affected by the tornado. EDS crews are also prepared to provide clean-up kits, hygiene kits, shower units and first-aid supplies, among other material assistance, to Oklahoma residents in need.
