The Salvation Army Prepares to Respond to Storms in Nebraska and Iowa

Salvation Army personnel throughout the Western Division (Nebraska, western Iowa and South Dakota) are mobilizing to respond to tornadoes and damaging winds which forecasters are predicting will occur today and overnight. Currently, The Salvation Army has a minimum of five canteens (mobile kitchen units) ready to enter the affected areas as soon as the storm passes.

Relief efforts will extend throughout the impacted region. In the short-term aftermath of the storm, Salvation Army officers and staff will focus primarily on the immediate needs of disaster survivors and first responders, providing food, hydration and shelter for impacted individuals and families. Mobile kitchens and canteen units are capable of serving over 1,500 meals per day.

The Salvation Army asks people who want to help those affected by the storms to visit or call 1-800-SAL-ARMY. Donors may contribute $10 via their phone bill by text messaging the word OMAHA to 80888, and confirming the donation with the word, “Yes”. Monetary donations are needed to meet survivors’ most immediate needs:

  • A $10 donation feeds a disaster survivor for one day
  • A $30 donation provides one food box, containing staple foods for a family of four, or one household cleanup kit, containing brooms, mops, buckets and other cleaning supplies
  • A $100 donation can serve snacks and drinks for 125 survivors and emergency personnel at the scene of a disaster
  • A $250 donation can provide one hot meal to 100 people or keep a hydration station operational for 24 hours
  • A $500 donation keeps a Salvation Army canteen fully operational for one day

Salvation Army Serving Evacuees at San Diego County Fires

As San Diego County fires continue to burn, The Salvation Army has deployed two mobile hydration units to serve water, electrolyte drinks, coffee and snacks to first responders and those impacted by the fires.

With Salvation Army centers in Oceanside and Escondido, as well as throughout the county, The Salvation Army is prepared to offer increased support as needed.

Dozens of volunteers including short wave radio operators are on notice that they may be needed at any time should the situation become worse and evacuations increase.

“Along with hydration and food, spiritual comfort is our priority,” says Lt. James Parks of the Escondido Salvation Army Corps Community Center. “We appreciate all of our community volunteers and those who give so generously to help those impacted by the wildfires.”

Earlier this week there was a massive structure fire in the Mission Bay District of San Francisco.
Two teams of Salvation Army Emergency Disaster pros and volunteers were deployed immediately in mobile kitchens – about the size of a standard parcel delivery truck – to serve food, beverages and moral support to the 400 firefighters on hand and those evacuated from their apartments.
The director of our Emergency and Disaster Services department in San Francisco is John McKnight. After the fire was out and the mobile kitchens were called back to home base, he penned a thank you letter to our friends at FedEx for their generous donation.
You see, there’s a reason our mobile kitchens are about the size of a standard parcel delivery truck: FedEx, one of America’s favorite parcel delivery companies, has donated 15 brand-new trucks to The Salvation Army in the last several years.
And boy, are we grateful!

Salvation Army Serving Survivors of Typhoon Haiyan

The Salvation Army is serving survivors of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines in the aftermath of the deadliest natural disaster on record. Classified as a category 5 typhoon, the scale of devastation became clear Sunday as the death toll is estimated to be as high as 10,000 or more.

Emergency Disaster Service teams have been providing essentials to those affected by the typhoon since the storm hit Friday, including food, shelter, water, and emotional and spiritual care.

“The Salvation Army is on the ground serving the immediate needs of survivors,” said Major Ron Busroe, The Salvation Army’s National Community Relations and Development Secretary. “Donations from the generous public will help provide basic necessities that survivors desperately need right now. But the effects of this tragedy will be felt for months – even years. We know that emotional and spiritual counseling is equally important for survivors to deal with the gravity of the situation.”

With more than 75 offices throughout the country, Salvation Army volunteers and staff are well prepared to service the immediate and long-term needs of those impacted by this disaster.

(Sioux City, Iowa, October 5, 2013) — The Salvation Army in the Sioux City, Iowa area has mobilized two teams of trained disaster response workers to assist residents and first responders impacted by six confirmed tornados that hit various area communities on Friday evening, October 4th.

On Saturday morning, Salvation Army disaster response units were serving residents and aid workers in Macy and Wayne, Nebraska. Coffee, cold beverages, breakfast items and sandwiches were being distributed in the impacted communities.

The Salvation Army is prepared to meet not only immediate physical needs, but to provide emotional and trauma counseling to those impacted by the storms. Included in the response team is Rob Ouellette, who is employed as a Salvation Army program director in Sioux City and is an experienced crisis counselor. Mr. Ouellette stated, “I went to Wayne State (College, located in Wayne, Neb.), so it is important for me to be able to help this community that is such a key part of my life. We are here to help—if they need something to drink, to eat, or want to talk—we are here for the folks affected by these storms.”

The Salvation Army is coordinating its services with the local governments, the American Red Cross, and other providers, so that the residents of the many communities impacted by the storm receive needed services and support. Salvation Army Continues Flooding Relief Efforts in Colorado

It’s been nearly a week since the severe flooding, caused by an unexpected torrential downpour, began in Colorado.
The relentless waters have spread across 17 counties, destroying over 2,500 homes and killed eight people. Hundreds remain missing.

The Salvation Army is continuing support, having provided more than 20,000 meals and nutritional items and 85,560 drinks to first responders, law enforcement and evacuees.

With the growing need for assistance, The Salvation Army has spread their services to additional flood impacted areas including Weld, Morgan, and Logan counties.

With the threat of more rainfall, The Salvation Army is preparing to provide for additional areas that may be affected. Additional Salvation Army emergency disaster personnel called in to manage increased needs arrived from Utah, Wyoming, Montana, California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Washington.

The Salvation Army prepares to move into Disaster Assistance Centers, which is scheduled to be operating in Boulder, Weld, and Larimer Counties in the next 48 hours.

The Salvation Army is providing meals to newly evacuated survivors at the Coors Event Center and for first responders, law enforcement and rescue workers at the Boulder County Incident Command Post at Linden Avenue and Broadway. The Salvation Army will continue to serve meals at long-term shelter Timberline Church, where personnel served more than 800 meals yesterday and even cared for evacuees’ pets.

3 Steps To Being Better Prepared for Disaster

(What NOT to do PSA Courtesy of FEMA and the Ad Council.) Natural and man-made disasters of recent years have proven that emergencies can happen unexpectedly in communities just like yours. Tornadoes, wildfires, flash floods, historic earthquakes, tsunamis, large scale power outages, and man-made tragedies are just a few examples. And even though the 2013 hurricane season started out slower than expected, a number of extreme weather events are predicted for the upcoming months, and knowing what to expect is key.

September is National Preparedness Month, a FEMA initiative that began in 2004 to keep Americans aware and prepared for emergencies.

Not everyone in your household may be in the same place when a disaster happens, so it’s important to make sure that the entire family is ready in the event of a disaster or emergency.

Develop a Plan Your emergency plan should include a group meeting place, one near the home, and one outside the neighborhood. Identify an emergency contact person from outside the immediate area in case local telephone lines are overwhelmed or not functioning. Designate responsibilities for each member of your household and plan to work together as a team.

Any emergency plan should also include decisions about where family members will go if ordered to evacuate and what route they will take to get there. It’s a good idea to include alternate routes in case roads are closed. If pets are part of the household, make sure to include plans for them such as pet-friendly hotels and animal shelters along the evacuation route.

Assemble a Kit Being prepared means being equipped with the proper supplies you may need in the event of an emergency or disaster. Keep your supplies in an easy-to-carry emergency preparedness kit that you can use at home or take with you in case you must evacuate.

Emergency kits should include items such as:  
  • battery-powered or crank radio
  • weather alert radio
  • extra batteries
  • first aid kit
  • sanitary wipes
  • dust mask
  • water for drinking and sanitation water purification tablets
  • waterproof matches and/or butane lighter
  • crank flashlight
  • plastic sheeting
  • non-perishable food for at least three days
  • disinfectants and medications
  • medical information for entire family, including details about dosages of required medications and a list of known health issues

Salvation Army Assisting Mass Feeding Efforts For Displaced Residents in Galena, AK

The Salvation Army is providing mass feeding operations to the community of Galena, AK as residents struggle to rebuild from one of the worst floods in the region in over a 100 years. Spurred by a broken ice dam on May 28, Alaskans have called the Yukon River flooding their “Katrina” as 90 percent of its buildings were destroyed. Houses were toppled or otherwise uninhabitable and roads were gone, creating damage estimated to be above $10 million. Over 10 weeks after the disaster, displaced residents, who were previously housed at the boarding school’s dorms, were asked to move from one temporary shelter to another.

As winter approaches and the community struggles to rebuild from this event, The Salvation Army has joined forces with FEMA, AmeriCorps and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as part of a Unified Command Team to continue feeding operations for displaced residents at multiple sites throughout the next several weeks. Emergency Disaster Services crews and volunteers are also assisting with addressing the short- and long-term housing and clothing needs of people displaced in flooding. Feeding team members from AmeriCorps and The Salvation Army.

Currently, Salvation Army teams are camped in tents outside the BLM kitchen. Additional EDS teams are scheduled to deploy from Anchorage on August 21 and September 4.

Raley’s Store Customers & Employees Donate $37,110.22 for Oklahoma Tornado Relief.

Raley’s Family of Fine Stores, a Sacramento-based grocer, announced Tuesday that $74,220.44 was raised by store customers and employees thanks to the Food for Families collection boxes that were designated for the Oklahoma Tornado Relief efforts during the month of June. The donation, collected in only four weeks, has been split between The Salvation Army and the American Red Cross with each organization receiving a check for $37,110.22 to be used for Oklahoma relief efforts. Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) teams of The Salvation Army have been providing disaster relief to Oklahomans in need since the EF5 tornado swept through the region on May 20.

In July, The Salvation Army transitioned to long-term recovery operations for families and individuals who have been impacted by the storm, including everything from food and financial assistance to emotional care and rebuilding efforts. These efforts will continue for at least the next two years.

“This is another great example of the incredible generosity of this community,” said Major Bill Dickinson, Salvation Army Divisional Commander of the Del Oro Division. “The Salvation Army is truly grateful for efforts made by Raley’s and its customers and employees. This will go a long way to provide any assistance now and in the future for the families and individuals in Oklahoma.”

“Daddy’s Home” comic strip raises awareness for Hurricane Sandy relief

Check out the comics section in today’s paper and you might see the latest from the acclaimed comic strip, “Daddy’s Home,” which highlights the still very present need in New York and New Jersey in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

The comic portrays the iconic Star Jet roller coaster sitting in the ocean in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, perhaps one of the most famous and enduring images from Hurricane Sandy’s devastating sweep along the East Coast last November.

“I want people to be aware that there’s still work to do,” said Tony Rubino, creative director of the syndicated comic alongside illustrator, Gary Markstein, who directs readers to The Salvation Army’s website (www.SalvationArmyUSA.org).

Eight months later, there is indeed a lot to be done for impacted residents. The Salvation Army continues to provide long-term assistance and disaster case management to help survivors find resources for rebuilding their damaged homes, while also providing financial assistance and referral services to residents in the hardest hit areas of Staten Island, Queens and Long Island.
