It’s no secret that it has become unseasonably cold for many parts of The United States. And with the temperatures continuing to drop, it’s time to bundle up.
This year, as you transition to your warmer wardrobe, consider freeing up some space in those cluttered closets and drawers by donating any jackets and coats you no longer wear to help support families who cannot afford proper winter attire.
Thanks to the generosity of Dillard’s Department Stores, The Salvation Army is helping to fill this need. This Saturday, November 22, select Dillard’s locations will host a one-day coat drive benefiting The Salvation Amy- and they need your help.
Visit one of the 86 participating stores this weekend and bring in any gently used coats and receive a token of appreciation from Dillard’s.
Just by clearing out your closet, you can make a huge difference in someone’s life.
If there is not a Dillard’s in your area, you can always donate gently used or new coats to your local Salvation Army Family Store. Just visit www.satruck.org and find the closet location near you.

Last week, schools across the country were once again filled with eager students- both fresh and familiar faces. It’s a bittersweet time for children as they say hello to old friends and goodbye to the freedom of summer and back to daily classroom and study routines. For most families, it’s a relief to know their kids are guaranteed at least one meal a day.
Nutrition is key for a child’s education. Students who live in food insecure households are at an a disadvantage both academically and physically compared to their food secured peers. This is true for everyone but is especially crucial for children and their development.
According to Feeding America, in 2012, 49.0 million Americans lived in food insecure households, 33.1 million adults and 15.9 million children.
The Salvation Army recognizes the severity of this issue and works to fights food insecurity and help families meet this basic need, and support healthy children in the classroom. One example of how we do this is our food pantries- which provide groceries for individuals and families in need and are essential to battling food insecurity.
But we need your help to fill our food banks!

We don’t usually associate homelessness, domestic violence and life in a shelter with ball gowns, sparkling jewelry or joyous dancing. For the women at The Salvation Army’s Ruth Lilly Women & Children’s Center in Indianapolis, this all changed with the inaugural Princess Ball, held next door to the shelter at Center City Corps.
The two buildings are part of the Block of Hope, The Salvation Army’s property in downtown Indianapolis that attends to the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of women, children and families from across Indiana. Many who come here have traveled difficult, demoralizing roads. Hope often seems out of reach and love a thing of fairy tales.
That’s where the idea of the Princess Ball grew. It was conceived as a way to show the women living at the Block of Hope that real beauty and worth live in our hearts and souls. As Envoy Becky Roberson explained to the ladies, “We are all princesses because we have all been kissed by the King.”
The event was made possible with the generous support of local businesses like More Than A Boutique, which donated gowns and shoes for the women, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang salon, which sent over a team of stylists to transform the women into “princesses” before the ball began. The Salvation Army ARC also stepped up with evening gowns and accessories and local baker George Taylor provided sweet treats from his A & M Bakery Cafe.
While many of the women seemed hesitant and unsure as they faced an unfamiliar activity, it wasn’t long before they were all dancing the night away in their new finery, uninhibited and joyous. Mothers swirled their daughters to the sweet sounds of “My Girl” and a riotous Conga line swirled around the pink-festooned sanctuary-turned-ballroom when “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” played over the speakers. Laughter, confidence and sisterhood replaced trepidation and feelings of worthlessness. Together, these women found strength and kinship.
Of course, it takes more than an evening playing Cinderella to mend broken lives.
The struggles that lie ahead for these women and their families are real, but they have a little extra firepower in their hearts and a more confident outlook as they take on the next challenge. After all, who wouldn’t glow a little brighter when she has been “Kissed by the King?”

I’ve worked for The Salvation Army for fifteen years. Along the way my friends will sometimes ask, “so how are things at the Goodwill?” Sometimes they say, “so, what’s going on at the Red Cross?”
My reply is usually, “I’m sure they’re doing great things like meeting needs and changing lives, but I work for The Salvation Army.” Well, now I can answer that question about Goodwill wholeheartedly in the affirmative because I know first-hand!
We recently teamed up with Goodwill of Central Arizona to open a job resource center on our Salvation Army campus in Phoenix. This first-of-its-kind center features 11 computer workstations with access to Goodwill’s database of jobs, as well as a staff member to help job seekers with services including resume development and interview strategy.
How’s that for putting two great organizations together to care for people in need!?
The center is a three-minute walk from The Salvation Army’s family shelter and located in a neighborhood with one of the highest rates of poverty in Arizona.
We’re praying that job-seekers all over Phoenix will find it a convenient place to go to learn job skills and receive assistance with their search.

One of the mobile kitchens donated by FedEx at the dedication event in San Francisco.

Earlier this week there was a massive structure fire in the Mission Bay District of San Francisco.
Two teams of Salvation Army Emergency Disaster pros and volunteers were deployed immediately in mobile kitchens – about the size of a standard parcel delivery truck – to serve food, beverages and moral support to the 400 firefighters on hand and those evacuated from their apartments.
The director of our Emergency and Disaster Services department in San Francisco is John McKnight. After the fire was out and the mobile kitchens were called back to home base, he penned a thank you letter to our friends at FedEx for their generous donation.
You see, there’s a reason our mobile kitchens are about the size of a standard parcel delivery truck: FedEx, one of America’s favorite parcel delivery companies, has donated 15 brand-new trucks to The Salvation Army in the last several years.
And boy, are we grateful!

Socks are easy to take for granted. If you’re like me, you have a drawer dedicated to single socks missing their pair, or loud printed pairs meant for only Christmas or Halloween.
Most people are surprised to learn that basic socks are the number one requested item at our homeless shelters. They are the most needed, but least donated article of clothing. And even though folks served by The Salvation Army may have greater needs such as shelter or food, they consistently get excited when offered a new pair of socks. Because honestly, nothing feels as good as a new pair, especially for someone used to wearing damaged, dirty or no socks at all.
This is why we’re thrilled that our generous friends at Hanes, America’s #1 sock brand, are once again warming the hearts and feet of our shelter residents by donating 225,000 pairs of socks to benefit The Salvation Army’s residential facilities. St. Grand, the benevolent giver who began stuffing 10 crisp $100 bills in Salvation Army kettles in 2011, has struck again. For the first time this season, a bundle of 10 $100 bills were stuffed into a Twin Cities red kettle at the Byerly’s in Roseville on Friday, Nov. 29.
“How appropriate,” said Major Jeff Strickler, Twin Cities Salvation Army Commander. “We just got the word out that kettles were 25 percent behind from last year and the next day we discover this amazing blessing.”
Strickler was quick to add that it takes those coins and $1 bills on a grand scale to really make this red kettle season successful.
“But it is so exciting for our bell ringers and those counting the money to discover these little bundles of joy,” he said.
St. Grand first broke onto the scene in 2011 and gave a total of 22 gifts in the Twin Cities and one outside the metro area. Last year in 2012 St. Grand was credited with 22 $1,000 gifts, including four in greater Minnesota.
“It really doesn’t matter if this is one person or multiple people,” said Strickler. “It has become legendary for us – an example of selfless giving without recognition.”

We’re excited to announce that Emblem3 will be performing at The Salvation Army’s 4th annual Rock the Red Kettle concert this Saturday Comprised of brothers Keaton and Wesley Stromberg and friend Drew Chadwick, Emblem3’s ambitious trio will help raise awareness of The Salvation Army’s recently-launched Red Kettle Campaign with a performance at Universal CityWalk’s “5 Towers” venue in Los Angeles alongside Kelly Rowland, Coco Jones, Noelle Bean, and headliner Austin Mahone.
The band’s big break came by competing on reality talent show, X Factor before signing to Syco Records label, which released the trio’s debut, “Nothing to Lose,” in July. We’re excited to hear them perform hits off the new album and to get fans excited about giving back this Christmas and throughout the year!

Starting this Saturday, November 29, select Walmart stores across the country will kick off the second annual Fill the Truck Toy Drive, which will collect hundreds of thousands of toys for children in need in partnership with The Salvation Army.
Shoppers visiting one of the 3,500 participating stores on November 29, December 7, and December 15 will have the opportunity to drop of new, unwrapped toys at the trucks or bins to be distributed to assist parents in providing joy to their children on Christmas morning.
“Walmart has been such a big supporter of The Salvation Army and we are so appreciative of all the hard work they put into Fill the Truck,” said Major Ron Busroe, National Community Relations and Development Secretary for The Salvation Army USA. “This year, Fill the Truck is reaching even more customers and our hope is to provide more children with a Christmas toy that they would not receive otherwise.”
In one day at last year’s inaugural event, generous shoppers donated an amazing 135,000 toys and 10,000 coats for American children in need.
For more than 40 years, Walmart has been an essential partner of The Salvation Army. In addition to these events, the Walmart Foundation – whose mission is to create opportunities so people can live better around the globe – is once again helping us combat hunger through a $1 million donation to support The Salvation Army’s feeding programs, which provide nearly 60 million meals each year to individuals in need.
This Thanksgiving and beyond, The Salvation Army give thanks for Walmart, our valued partner in Doing the Most Good.
